Preceptors:

  • Karanjit S. Kooner, M.D., M.B.A.
  • Martin Wax, M.D.
  • Jess T. Whitson, M.D.
  • Nalini Aggarwal, M.D.

Duration of Fellowship: One (1) year.

Program number: 754.22

Goal: The goal of the glaucoma fellowship program is to provide graduates of accredited residency programs with extensive exposure to the medical and surgical management of difficult glaucoma problems.  Preference will be given to those applicants who are considering a career in academic ophthalmology.

Description of Program: The glaucoma fellow will have the opportunity to participate fully in the management of both private and county hospital patients.  There is ample hands-on training in the latest surgical techniques; the surgical workload is such that each fellow will have completed approximately 125 to 150 cases as primary surgeon and another 300 to 400 cases as assistant over the year.

The hospitals associated with the glaucoma fellowship are University Hospital - St. Paul, Parkland Memorial Hospital, John Peter Smith Hospital, Children's Medical Center at Dallas, and the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  The two fellows will spend time on the glaucoma service at the county hospitals of Dallas and Tarrant Counties (Parkland and John Peter Smith) as well as with the four preceptors who have busy private practices.  Private clinics generally see around 25 to 30 patients per half-day.  They clinics have state-of-the-art equipment and excellent ancillary support.

Research Opportunity: At any one time there are a large number of clinical research trials ongoing in which the fellows are involved.  In-depth involvement in one or more trials by the fellow is encouraged.  Additionally, there are five basic scientists in the department with research interests in the anterior segment of the eye.  Each has a fully equipped lab with ongoing research projects in which the fellows are encouraged to be active.

Stipend: Fellows are paid at the PGY-5 level.

Licensure Requirements: A Texas medical license is required and must be obtained prior to starting the Fellowship.

Appointment: Prospective glaucoma fellows are required to sign a Memorandum of Appointment, which contains a restrictive covenant.  For further information on the restrictive covenant, please contact the Education Office for the Department of Ophthalmology at 214-648-3848.

Application Process: Glaucoma fellowship program applicants must register and submit an application through the SFMatch Central Application System (CAS).  Please refer to the SFMatch website (http://www.sfmatch.org) to register for the match and read about the new process for applying to Ophthalmology Fellowship training in 2008.
