Dallas - November 3, 2009 -- Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) should be considered a new standard of care for early-stage lung cancer treatment in patients with co-existing medical problems, according to results from a national clinical trial led by UT Southwestern Medical Center physicians. Dr. Robert Timmerman, vice chair of radiation oncology and Simmons Cancer Center member, was the principal investigator on this study and notes that this has "changed the standard of care for lung cancer patients with serious medical problems like emphysema, heart disease and strokes." Dallas - October 29, 2009 -- Dr. Pier Paolo Scaglioni, assistant professor of internal medicine and a member of the Simmons Cancer Center, and his colleagues have eliminated non-small cell lung (NSCL) cancer in mice by using an investigative drug called BEZ235 in combination with low-dose radiation. Dallas - July 21, 2009 -- Dr. Adi Gazdar and his research team are among an elite group of cancer scientists to share a $2 million grant to find biomarkers for lung cancer that develops in people who have never smoked. The National Cancer Institute's Early Detection Research Network (EDRN) and the Canary Foundation are funding this partnership to support studies designed to further understand lung cancer and develop a test to detect early-stage lung cancer in lifetime nonsmokers. Dallas - April 1, 2009 -- Dr. Amyn Habib and a team of researchers have recently found that an inflammation-related molecule called RIP1 is commonly found in high levels of glioblastoma, the most common primary malignant brain tumor in adults. This finding could provide a new target for therapeutic drugs for glioblastoma patients who have a high level of RIP1 in their tumors coupled with NF-kappaB activation. Click here for full story.
