All research involving human subjects must be submitted for review and approval by the Institutional Review Board. The process of applying for IRB review depends upon the risks to subjects. Human subject means a living individual about whom an investigator (whether professional or student) conducting research obtains (1) data through intervention or interaction with the individual, or (2) identifiable private information. (45 CFR 46.102f). Risks to subjects are classified as physical, psychological, social, or economic.

Initial Submission Process for Full Board Review
Expedited Review - Minimal Risk (45 CFR 46.110)
Exempt Review - No Risk or Virtually No Risk (45 CFR 46.101b)
