| In 1968, the Skillern Student Union was constructed to accommodate a small campus population. While Southwestern Medical Center was in its growing stages, the Skillern Student Union was primarily a social center. Simultaneously with the dramatic campus growth, the interests and needs of students changed. More and more students were interested in physical activities such as sports and exercise as a respite from the enormous stress of the curriculum and clinical demands. The Skillern Student Union became the hub of the organization of these activities, to the extent the 8,000 square feet allowed. Using off-campus facilities, the intramural program grew to one of the largest in the country for a stand-alone academic medical center. But individual activity was substantially limited, as off-campus facilities were not quickly accessible or affordable. The Bryan Williams, M.D. Student Center offers the opportunity for many organized and individual activities that provide a recreational break from academic pursuits, improve physical health, and develop skills and interests that contribute to healthy lifestyles. |
