Our Fellows and the American Society of Hematology’s Clinical Research Training Institute
In 2003 the American Society of Hematology (ASH) initiated its Clinical Research Training Institute (CRTI), a year long program developed to prepare hematology-oncology fellows and very junior faculty members for a successful career in patient-oriented research. Twenty participants are selected each year through a highly competitive peer-review process. What is noteworthy is that for six consecutive years – ever since the program began – one of these 20 CRTI participants has been a current fellow in our program or one of its recent graduates. The participants – Charles Quinn (2003-4), Janna Journeycake (2004-5), Shelley Crary (2005-6), Tamra Slone (2006-7), Cindy Neunert (2007-8), Tim McCavit (2008-9) and Amanda Blair (2009-2010)– have all benefited immensely from this experience. Their acceptance to and success in the program reflects positively on their talents and determination to succeed. The Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program at UT Southwestern and Children’s is extremely proud of our fine young clinical investigators, who represent the cream of the crop nationally. No other fellowship training program in the United States – either in pediatric or adult hematology – has been represented each year by a CRTI participant. We take great pride in that accomplishment.
