Rotations
The fellow rotates through the various areas with ample hands-on experience to triage specimen adequacy, properly set up cultures, workup isolates to the degree necessary based on specimen source, set up appropriate antimicrobial susceptibility studies, understand principles of biochemical (and/or other) identification tests, troubleshoot equipment, perform appropriate quality control procedures. Also learn how to plan for and set up a laboratory and/or make changes in an existing laboratory.
1. The fellow's experience and responsibilities in the mycology, mycobacteriology, and parasitology laboratories include the following:
- Understand morphologic characteristics for identification
- Media needed for isolation and identification
- Various staining techniques used for detection and identification
- Immunological & nucleic acid techniques for identification
- Guide clinicians in the proper utilization of the lab.
2. The fellow's experience and responsibilities in the virology laboratory include the following:
- Gain a working knowledge of cell culture, serologic and molecular techniques
- Know the typical CPE for the various viruses
- Guide clinicians in the proper utilization of the lab.
