This one-year accredited fellowship position is intended for physicians wishing to acquire special expertise in all aspects of transfusion medicine. The Fellow spends 6 months on the UT Southwestern campus and 4 months at Carter BloodCare located in Bedford, Texas. Additionally, one month is spent in the HLA laboratory (three weeks at UT and Baylor University Medical Center) and paternity testing at Gene Screen, a private laboratory. The participant will be integrally involved in the activities of both an independent community blood collection center and three hospital transfusion services. Hospitals are conveniently located on one campus and include a major county hospital with regional trauma center, a children's hospital, and a private university hospital with surgical emphasis. Active transplantation services include kidney, bone marrow, and pediatric heart and liver. Apheresis services are well utilized, both for cell collection and therapeutic procedures. The blood donation center collects approximately 220,000 whole blood donors per year and is involved in peripheral blood progenitor cell harvesting and cryopreservation as well as bone marrow processing. The emphasis of the fellowship will be on clinical consultation with physicians, patients, and donors, with excellent laboratory exposure to both serologic techniques and blood component processing. The responsibilities will include participation in resident education and attendance at policy-making and utilization review organizations. Opportunities for research are available and encouraged.
