how to apply

We are pleased to learn of your interest in internal medicine at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas affiliated hospitals: Parkland Health and Hospital System, VA North Texas Health Care System, and UT Southwestern University Hospitals.

The Department of Medicine offers both categorical (3 years) and preliminary (1 year) training programs. Be sure to indicate on your application the program(s) to which you are applying.

In order to meet you and give you an opportunity to learn about our program from the attending staff and current house officers, we offer a choice of 10 interview dates. In 2009-2010 these are:

On Friday, the interview session begins at 8:00 a.m. and concludes with a reception from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

We are accepting applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) offered by the American Association of Medical Colleges. For more information you may access them on the world wide web at www.aamc.org/eras or contact your dean's office.

Be sure to include anything you would like us to know about your academic achievements, scholastic honors, research experience, publications, occupational history, extracurricular activities, outside interests, family, etc.

We require the following documentation with your application:

  • The Dean's Letter;
  • 3 letters of recommendation. Two must be from full-time members of your Department of Medicine regarding your performance during your clinical clerkship in medicine. We do not require a Chairman's letter;
  • An official Medical School transcript, including all grades for required clerkships;
  • Your scores on part I and, if available, part II of the United States Medical Licensure Examination (USMLE); and
  • Personal Statement

In addition, we are particularly interested in letters of recommendation from your attending physician during any medicine subinternship or externship that you performed your senior year.
