 Dwain Thiele, M.D.
Interim Chairman, Internal Medicine
We are delighted to welcome you to UT Southwestern and hope that you will discover the reasons behind the great pride that we have in our training program in Internal Medicine. The residency program is special. It is based on a commitment to teaching and lifelong education in the scientific principles of medicine, and also in the belief that each of you must be challenged to evaluate patients and to make decisions in their care when they are most in need. The result, we are confident, is that is that our graduates rank among the very best, and are fully able to balance the true responsibilities of medicine - competence and compassion - in a remarkable manner. Along the way, our residents develop into outstanding academicians, teachers, and physicians who approach the next steps in their chosen profession with confidence and inspiration.

Residency Program Director
Internal Medicine
The clinical experience of our trainees is based on a foundation of the strengths of our teaching hospitals, commitment of our faculty, and investment of the department in the residency program. The University Hospitals’ tertiary referral practice gives trainees exposure to cutting-edge diagnostics and therapeutics. Parkland Hospital is a premier county hospital serving indigent patients of Dallas County, as well as patients from all over the world who present with an unparalleled spectrum of disease processes. The Dallas VA Medical Center, one of the largest in America, offers housestaff the opportunity to care for our nation’s veteran population. The strength of the residency program is the close relationship the housestaff share with our clinical faculty. Internal Medicine is fortunate to have three department chairs still active in teaching our residents. The faculty recognizes that the housestaff are the lifeblood of our practice and provide the house officers with the autonomy to be the patients’ primary providers in a way that optimizes learning. Post-graduate training programs around the country know the quality of our graduates; and whether or not you choose to specialize after residency, you will leave this program as an excellent physician with a solid scientific foundation and close professional relationships that will last a lifetime.
