MED 1901 - Directed Studies in Select Basic Sciences

Course Description: The purpose of this one credit-hour summer course is to promote optimal student performance in future MS1/MS2 coursework as well as on the USMLE: S1.  The course is six weeks in duration and features: a. reviews and performance assessments in select MS1 subjects, i.e., biochemistry, neuroscience, physiology, anatomy, genetics and cell biology; and b. introductions (for rising MS2 students)/reviews (for repeating MS2 students) in select MS2 subjects, i.e., immunology, pathology, and pharmacology.  Those invited to participate would include:

  • Students required to repeat the MS1 or MS2 school year 
  • Repeating students who successfully remediated the MS1 school year 
  • MS1s who received marginal pass grades in multiple subjects 
  • (On a limited audit basis) MS1 students who need to remediate one basic science subject in summer school
  • Students with special circumstances, e.g., a medical disability, return from leave- of-absence, etc...

To qualify for financial assistance,  and obtain a one-hour pass/fail credit, participants must attend fulltime. This means that in addition to taking biochemistry, neuroscience and physiology,

  • Those in the MS1 track will also take cell biology, biochemical/genetic disorders and anatomy
  • Those in the MS2 track will also take immunology, pathology and pharmacology
