When is the Medical Student Research Forum this year?
The UT Southwestern Medical Student Research Forum is an annual event. The 46th Annual Forum will be held on January 22, 2008 on the UT Southwestern main campus in room D1.602. Student presentations will begin at 3 PM. The guest speaker for this year will be Dr. Errol Crook, Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Southern Alabama. A reception and poster session will follow the Forum in the Faculty Club.
Who can present in the poster session?
All students can present one or more posters at the Forum, even if an abstract was not submitted to the Forum. All that is required is that the student let Dr. McPhaul know - by e-mail - so that sufficient space will be available for all of the posters.
What format should I use for the poster ?
An example of a hypothetical poster is here. (Save this PowerPoint file to your desktop - it will open more easily).
A critical feature is the dimensions of the poster. The dimensions of the example are 46 inches wide by 36 inches tall. I suggest that students keep their posters near this size, even though there is room to make them considerably wider. Nonetheless, it is critical that the height be no taller than 36 inches.
How will it be printed?
I encourage students to take advantage of the resources provided by their mentors and their department for the printing of their posters. That being said, I will have the posters that are e-mailed to me printed in the Medical Illustrations department.
After submitting the poster to me by e-mail, I will forward it to Medical Illustrations. They will e-mail you directly when the proof is ready to approve (Medical Illustrations is at the foot of the stairs that lead up to the library; phone: 8-3395). They will print it and you will pick it up from them and hang it on Tuesday.
When should I hang my poster and where?
Obtain a poster number from Patricia Strackbein in my office. Look for the poster board number outside the Faculty Club on January 22 nd. I hope to have these in place by ~ 11AM or 12 noon. After the lunch hour is over, they will be moved into the Faculty Club in preparation for the reception. Pins will be provided on tables outside the Faculty Club.
How long will I need to stay by my poster ?
Those with odd poster numbers will need to stay by their posters from 5:45 to 6:30. Those with even poster numbers should stay by their posters from 6:30 to 7:15. During these periods, be prepared to give a brief explanation of your work to the attendees that come to view your poster.
What happens as the poster session ends?
Take your poster down and take it with you. The next morning, the poster stands will be reassembled down by the cafeteria. Please re hang your poster there as early as possible on Wednesday morning. The judges will complete the judging during the viewing period (Wednesday AM until noon on Friday). Please take you poster down by 1 PM on Friday.
