Patient Care

Procedural skills

  1. Objectives
    1. Understand how to set up, evaluate and interpret immunofluorescent slide assays
    2. Understand how to set up, evaluate and interpret the CD4 assay (flow cytometry)
  2. Plan
    1. Daily reading and review of IF slides and flow cytometry dot plots with medical technologist or second resident
    2. Daily discussion of results with faculty at Immunology rounds
    3. Review of discrepant reports with immunology faculty
  3. Supervision / Assessment:
    1. Methods of Assessment
      1. Observation by the pathologists and lab technologists/manager regarding daily review of IF slides and flow cytometry
      2. End-of-Rotation quiz and evaluation
    2. Observer(s):
      1. Laboratory Technologists
      2. Laboratory Managers
      3. Immunology Faculty

Interpretive skills:

  1. Objectives
    1. Become proficient with the appropriate ordering of tests for diagnosis and management of common immunological disorders and disease
  2. Plan
    1. Daily discussion of abnormal results at Immunology rounds
    2. Review of reports with Immunology Faculty
    3. Daily preparation of Reference Lab reports and referred test requests for joint review with Immunology Faculty
    4. Daily slide and flow cytometry dot plot review
  3. Supervision / Assessment
    1. Methods of Assessment
      1. Observation by the pathologists, lab manager and technologists
      2. End-of-Rotation quiz and evaluation
