Systems-based Practice

  1. Objectives:
    1. Understand the principles of laboratory quality control and quality assurance
    2. Understand how the results that he laboratory generates are used by clinicians in formulating patient management plans
  2. Plan:
    1. Residents will be exposed to quality control and quality assurance issues through participation in regular diagnostic activities of the Neuropathology Division, and by interaction with laboratory technical staff
    2. Residents will participate in the evaluation of proficiency testing materials, along with divisional faculty, fellows, and laboratory staff.
    3. Through attendance at interdisciplinary conferences with clinical services, the resident will learn to appreciate the role of diagnostic testing in patient management and the role of the neuropathologist as a clinical consultant.
  3. Supervision/Assessment:
    1. Resident performance will be assessed through direct observation by Neuropathology faculty, fellows, and office and laboratory staff, and by clinicians and others who interact with the Neuropathology Division.
    2. Some concepts may be tested through the written multiple choice examination that is administered at the end of the rotation.
    3. Input from Neuropathology faculty and staff regarding individual resident performance is solicited by the rotation director, and communicated to the resident through face-to-face verbal as well as formal written evaluations.  The formal written evaluation that is completed at the end of the rotation becomes a part of the residents permanent record.
