OVERVIEW
The Neuropathology rotation is required for all AP and AP/CP residents. Recognizing the specialized nature of the diagnostic studies carried out in Neuropathology, it is a senior resident-level rotation. Residents on the Neuropathology rotation divide their time among the main Neuropathology Laboratory, Parkland Memorial Hospital, Zale Lipshy University Hospital, and the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office. Under the supervision of the Neuropathology faculty, residents work with Neuropathology fellows as they actively participate in the evaluation of a comprehensive body of pathological lesions of the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and neuromuscular systems. Residents evaluate representative brain biopsies, autopsy brain cases, neuromuscular biopsies, and outside consultation cases submitted to Neuropathology during the time that they are assigned to the rotation. Cases are first evaluated independently by the resident, and then reviewed for signout with Neuropathology attending staff.
Neuropathology has an extensive archival collection of clinical case material that consists of over 200,000 microscopic slides, 16,000 electron micrographs, 10,000 gross and microscopic kodachromes or digital photographs, 500 fixed museum specimens, and 45 plastic embedded brain slices that represent more than 37,000 cases collected since 1972. All of this material, as well as the respective diagnostic reports, other relevant clinical information, and selected radiographs are filed within Neuropathology, and are thus immediately accessible for study and are retrievable through a computerized indexing system. Every major neurologic disease category is represented in this material, including degenerative, infectious, neoplastic, infectious/inflammatory, demyelinating, metabolic, congenital/malformative, vascular, and traumatic disorders, as well as neuromuscular disease and many examples of normal tissues.
Residents participate actively in regular conferences of the Division of Neuropathology, including regular attendance, background preparation for case reviews, and participation in discussions. Many of these conferences are interdisciplinary activities that involve other clinical neuroscience departments. The Departments of Pathology, Neurology, Neurological Surgery, and Psychiatry, the Center for Basic Neuroscience Research, the Center for Human Development, the Alzheimer Disease Center, and the institution also sponsor a variety of regular seminars, guest speakers, and other educational programs that are available to residents on Neuropathology.
