Systems-Based Practice

  1. Objectives: The resident should understand principles of laboratory quality control and quality assurance, and how the results are used by clinicians in formulating a management plan.
  2. Plan: The resident will be exposed to quality assurance issues during sessions in the hematology and bone marrow laboratories with the medical technologists, in which quality control procedures will be directly demonstrated and discussed.  The resident will also participate in interpreting proficiency testing (PT) survey materials with the responsible attending, as well as review the PT results with the medical director. In addition, the residents will attend management lectures and the weekly management meeting with medical directors and laboratory managers during the management rotation, at which ongoing technical, logistical, and quality assurance issues are discussed. Finally, through attendance at joint conferences with clinical services, the resident will learn to appreciate the role of diagnostic testing in patient management and the role of the pathologist as a clinical consultant
  3. Assessment: Direct observation by hematopathology faculty, fellows, and technologists.
