Systems-Based Practice

  1. Objectives
    1. Develop familiarity with the Histology Laboratory, including a working relationship with the histologists and gross room personnel.
    2. Understand and use the hospital and laboratory software and computer systems.
    3. Practice safety in the various anatomic pathology laboratories.
    4. Develop an appreciation for the importance of surgical pathology specimen interpretation and correlation with clinical information.
  2. Plan
    1. Acquire informal knowledge by review of laboratory and gross room training manuals, finalization of surgical pathology reports and interpersonal communication with clinicians, attending pathologists and laboratory and administrative personnel.
    2. Attending departmental conferences.
    3. Attending formal training seminars administered by the Pathology Department and/or computer-based training and continuing education.
  3. Supervision/Assessment
    1. Systems-based practice is informally assessed by interaction with attending pathologists during rotation.
