OVERVIEW
Two months are spent at Children's Medical Center under the direction of 5 board-certified pediatric pathologists. This 322-bed tertiary care facility serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Department of Pediatrics and is part of the Medical Center campus. Large transplant programs, and active hematology-oncology, neuro-oncology, gastroenterology and metabolic/genetic services contribute to a broad spectrum of teaching materials. Responsibilities are limited to surgical pathology and incorporate electron microscopy, immunofluorescence microscopy, immunocytochemistry, and enzyme histochemistry. Residents participate in the preparation and interpretation of CT-guided FNA's and intraoperative frozen sections. Graduated responsibility on the service includes acting as a primary contact for clinicians and presentation of cases at interdepartmental conferences. Pediatric autopsy and hematopathology are included in those respective services. An excellent self study set of over 600 pediatric pathology cases supplements one-on-one teaching and conferences.
