OVERVIEW
The Molecular Pathology rotation includes training in basic and advanced molecular biology techniques as applied to modern pathology. The resident will observe molecular diagnostic tests for hematopoietic malignancies, infectious diseases, solid tumors, pharmacogenomics and inherited disorders. The resident will have numerous interactions with the Director during this rotation. These interactions will include problem based teaching on various aspects of Molecular Pathology, signing out results and investigating unusual test results. At the end of the rotation, the resident will be able to describe the various target based and signal based amplification methods and list the pros and cons for each method. The resident will diagram the workflow of a molecular diagnostic laboratory and list the possible pitfalls of molecular diagnostic tests. The resident will be exposed to "real-time" PCR, molecular karyotyping, MLPA, clinical sequencing, array based tests and solid tumor theranostic tests. During this rotation, the resident will also meet with the translational pathology faculty and learn about emerging technologies and approaches in modern pathology.
