OVERVIEW

During the second year of training, 3 months are spent on the cytology service at Parkland Health and Hospital System. Here the requirements for maintaining a certified cytology laboratory are taught. Daily interactive sessions with the cytopathology faculty lead the resident from a consideration of basic cell types to the appreciation of cytologic abnormalities in a wide variety of gynecologic and non-gynecologic materials. Experience is in CT-directed fine needle aspirates in conjunction with the Radiology Department and the performance and interpretation of superficial fine needle aspirates in the Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Clinic conducted twice weekly by the Department of Pathology at Parkland Health and Hospital Systems. Extensive additional experience with FNA technique and interpretation is gained during the Dallas VA Medical Center rotation.
