2009 John A. Hartford Senior Geriatrics Leadership Scholars Award to Craig Rubin, M.D.

Craig Rubin, M.D., is one of five accomplished academic geriatricians nationwide to receive a prestigious 2009 John A. Hartford Senior Geriatrics Leadership Scholars Award. The program is designed to provide these leaders with the tools to “shape the future of medicine and enhance the health of the aging population.”

GIM Faculty Receive Teaching Awards 2009

Four GIM faculty received awards at the 4th Annual Excellence in Education Award Ceremony on October 24, 2009.

  • Excellence in Education (Sub-Internship) Award:  Amit Shah, M.D.
  • Clinical Medicine & UT Academy of Health Science Education Award: Jim Wagner, M.D.
  • Ambulatory Care Award: Paula Noe, M.D.
  • Internal Medicine Award: Elizabeth Paulk, M.D.

Watson Clinical Excellence Prize goes to Gary Reed, M.D.

Gary Reed, M.D., was selected as the first recipient of the Watson Prize for Excellence in Clinical Medicine. This award will be given annually to honor a member of the UT Southwestern faculty for excellence in contributions as a clinician and/or clinical innovator. 

The award is supported by an endowment gift from Dr. Bill Watson, a graduate of UT Southwestern, and his wife Patricia. They have requested that it be used "to recognize a physician who has a profound impact on patients and their families through hands-on clinical care."

Dallas Business Journal (DBJ) Honors Halm and Amarsingham as Health Care Heroes

Ethan Halm, M.D., received the DBJ Newcomer Award. The DBJ article cited Dr. Halm's commitment to "delivering high-quality, evidenced-based, patient-centered care" as well as his focus on "robust clinical outcomes and health research programs."

Ruben Amarsingham, M.D., was awarded the DBJ Academic Researcher Award.  The DBJ article cites his studies of social indicators as a way to predict and prevent future medical problems, and how hospitals with better IT systems (eg. electronic medical records) have better patient outcomes. Dr. Amarsingham's efforts are widely recognized and are being used in the development of public health policy and legislation.

GIM Faculty Receive Teaching Awards 2008

Five GIM faculty received awards at the 4th Annual Excellence in Education Award Ceremony, Oct. 15, 2008.

  • Distinguished Clinical Science Educator Award: Rody Cox, M.D.
  • Pre-Clinical Teaching Awards from Class of 2010 for MS2: James M. Wagner, M.D.;  (High Exposure Teachers) and Hari Raja, M.D., (Small Group Teachers)
  • Core Clerkship Teaching Award:  Ellwood Jones, M.D. (Family Medicine), and Elizabeth Paulk, M.D. (Ambulatory Care).

Dr. Rody Cox also was elected to join the elite UT Southwestern Academy of Teachers for 2008 and in addition, he will receive the prestigious honor of Mastership in the American College of Physicians. Masters are a small group of distinguished physicians who are recognized for their preeminence in practice or medical research, hold positions of high honor, or make significant contributions to medical science or the art of medicine.
