Cancer requires support from immune system to develop

DALLAS - October 30, 2008 -- Dr. Luis Parada and a team of scientists have found that tumors growing around nerves in a rare genetic disease need cooperation from cells from the immune system in order to grow.  Treating mice with a drug that attacks the immune cells — not the tumor — greatly reduced the size and metabolism of the tumors, the scientists reported. A clinical trial of the treatment in humans has begun.  Click here for full story.

Molecular 'clock' could predict risk for developing breast cancer

DALLAS — May 14, 2008 — Dr. David Euhus has helped determine that methylation acts as a type of biological clock, indicating how many times a cell has divided. The chemical reaction in genes could one day help researchers more accurately determine a woman’s risk for developing breast cancer and provide a new approach for treatment. UT Synthetic molecules may be less expensive alternative to therapeutic antibodies, researchers find

DALLAS — Apr. 4, 2008 — Dr. Thomas Kodadek is chief of translational research and member of the cancer center. He has developed a simple and inexpensive method to screen small synthetic molecules and pull out a handful that might treat cancer and other diseases less expensively than current methods. Hormonal dietary supplements might promote prostate cancer progression
