Synthetic compound promotes death of lung-cancer cells, tumors

DALLAS — Nov. 12, 2007 — Human lung-cancer tumors grown in mice have been shown to regress or disappear when treated with a synthetic compound that mimics the action of a naturally occurring “death-promoting” protein found in cells, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center report. New 'seed' therapy helps pinpoint breast tumors with more accuracy

DALLAS — Oct. 11, 2007 — Physicians at UT Southwestern Medical Center are the first in Texas to use a new technique in which a small radioactive pellet, or “seed”, is implanted into a mass or suspicious lesion in the breast to pinpoint its exact location for surgical removal. Radiation therapy technique reduces length of prostate cancer treatment

DALLAS — Sept. 20, 2007 — Breihan Bridgewater suffers from emphysema. He sleeps on his side because when he lays flat on his back it feels like there’s a boulder resting on his chest. When the 74-year-old semi-retired electronic technician was diagnosed with prostate cancer, the thought of undergoing surgery or having to lie on his back and undergo more than 40 radiation treatments left him with an uneasy feeling – and a decision to make. Radiation and drug combo helps boost efficacy of lung-cancer treatment

DALLAS — Sept. 1, 2007 — Combining radiation therapy with a drug that helps destroy blood vessels nourishing malignant tumors has been shown in mice to be significantly more effective in treating lung cancer than either approach alone, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found. Substance in tree bark could lead to new lung-cancer treatment

DALLAS — June 25, 2007 — Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have determined how a substance derived from the bark of the South American lapacho tree kills certain kinds of cancer cells; these findings suggest a novel treatment for the most common type of lung cancer.
