In order to be in compliance with the Drug Enforcement Agency standards for the dispensing of controlled substances, new procedures were established in May 2008.

The use of veterinary controlled substances will be dispensed by the Veterinary Pharmacy staff on the Aston 8th floor. To obtain a controlled substance drug for animal use you will need to do the following:

1. Register as an approved laboratory through Traci Bates in Environmental Health and Safety at ext. 58347. You must be registered and trained to gain access to the dispensing machines that will be used.
2. Request specific drug(s) through an on-line form (iAim) at:
3. Drugs will be dispensed by one of two means

a) Pyxis dispensing machines located on the North (NG2.902) or South (L4.135) campus, or

b) The Aston 8th floor veterinary pharmacy

The pharmacy will be available for access or help Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at x80357. The dispensing machines will be available 24 hours a day Monday-Friday provided your request for a specific drug has been approved for dispensing by the pharmacy.
4 Users of the automated dispensing system must be approved and trained prior to requesting drugs. Training will be provided by the pharmacy staff. Each laboratory will need to identify a superuser and up to 3 requestors. These individuals will require training to operate the machines. Please email Traci at Traci.Bates@UTSouthwestern.edu the name of your laboratory superuser. There will be a per laboratory maintenance fee of $50.00 for only the month of the transaction, regardless of the number of protocols you may have. The maintenance fee will be assessed during the month in which the transaction occurs. The pharmacy will inventory the current supply of controlled substances in the lab and allow you to retain a month’s supply based upon anticipated need. The remainder will be retained by the pharmacy and the lab will be credited with the amount.
