Our team of gynecologic oncologists offers a full spectrum of cancer-related care.  In addition to traditional options, we provide several unique services and approaches to cancer for the benefit of our patients.

Laparoscopy:  For many women, cancer surgery requires an abdominal incision and lengthy postoperative recovery.  For some of these women, our trained specialists can offer laparoscopy.

Laparoscopy can be performed through a few inch-long abdominal incisions.  In general, laparoscopy offers patients a shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery, decreased risk of infection, and lower costs.

Many hysterectomies, lymph node removals, and some ovarian mass excisions can be performed using this technique.

Genetic counseling:  Although our experts are trained in the treatment of cancers of the female reproductive tract, prevention is another important goal.  Many women affected by these cancers have concerns, not only for their own health, but also for the health of other family members.

Therefore, prevention is the primary focus at the Hereditary Gynecologic Cancer program.  Begun in September 2000, the program offers assessment, counseling, preventive surgery, and medical management to patients with increased risks for cancers of the female reproductive organs.  Working in conjunction with a genetic counselor, our cancer specialists can determine whether these cancers in a given family are hereditary.  Physicians can then provide risk assessment and counseling to patients and their families.

Fistula Repair:  Extensive cancer surgeries or radiation therapy may successfully remove life-threatening cancers.  Unfortunately for some women, the tissue damage and poor healing that follows these treatments may lead to permanent holes, called fistulas, in the bladder or rectum.  As a result, patients may note chronic and continuous loss of stool or urine passing through the vagina.

For some women, this complication of cancer therapy leads to corrective surgeries called ostomy procedures.  These procedures redirect stool or urine to drain into an external pouch on the abdomen.

Fortunately for many women, fistulas can be repaired and permanent ostomy use avoided.   Our specialists in cancer surgery can offer this corrective surgery when necessary following cancer treatment.

The Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center:  This facility houses a broad-based collection of cancer programs, each providing a wide range of patient care services.  Our team of physicians and their support staffs, representing virtually every clinical department at the medical center, is devoted to our patients' health and well-being through the blending of leading edge cancer research with the best of conventional cancer care.  We strive to be at the forefront of patient care by providing state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic approaches that are specific to each patient's need.

We invite you to read and learn more about the cancer specialists in our department.
