The menopause offers a unique time when physicians and patients can discuss and initiate preventative and life-extending health care. With an average life expectancy of about 79 years, the typical American woman can expect to live one third of her life after menopause. The Lowe Foundation Center for Women's Preventative Health Care at UT Southwestern was designed as a model for the advancement of care for the peri- and postmenopausal woman.  CLICK HERE for Specialists in Perimenopausal and Menopausal Well-Woman Care.

The "menopause" is a woman's last menstrual period, when production of ovarian estrogen ceases. The transitional period during which progressive loss of ovarian function occurs is known as the "peri-menopausal period". The terms "postmenopausal" or "menopausal" period refer to the time after the menopause during which a woman usually experiences endocrine, physical, and psychological changes.

"Menopausal syndrome" refers to a collection of symptoms that may occur during the four- to six-year period surrounding the menopause. These symptoms may include:
  • Hot flushes (vasomotor instability);
  • Dryness and atrophy of the lining of the urinary tract and vagina; and
  • Related symptoms that may include insomnia, mood shifts, irritability, inability to concentrate, and nervousness.
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding in the perimenopause

The Lowe Foundation Women's Center provides multidisciplinary care for the effects of estrogen loss, including preventative treatment of:
  • Bone loss
  • Prevention of heart disease
  • Bladder incontinence
  • Hormone-dependent cancers
  • Mood disorders and
  • Other disorders affected by the aging process
  • Postmenopausal bleeding
