Compensation and Benefits
Fellows receive health insurance and an annual trainee stipend that increases with each year of fellowship training. Beginning in the second year, trainees are asked to take 12 nights of in-house call outside their area of speciality training. This clinical service is not associated with our fellowship training programs. To compensate for in-house night call, fellows are appointed to UT Southwestern salaried faculty positions as part-time Assistant Instructors.
To be eligible for night-call supplementation, fellows must have a Texas Medical License, DEA, and DPS certificates and be credentialed with our hospitals and manage care organizations. A permanent Texas medical license is required to begin the credentialing process.
Texas Medical License
Licensure in Texas is a lengthy process, and first-year fellows are urged to make application early. The Texas Medical Board (TMB) now accepts applications on-line. Their website is http://www.tmb.state.tx.us. See also Getting Your Texas Medical License.
Personal Time Off
At the discretion of the fellowship program director, ABOG fellows may take up to two weeks of personal time off each fellowship year. Personal time off may be used for personal business (such as job interviews), leisure, or for health reasons.
