The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and patient care. Academically oriented, the Department has a tradition of evidence-based medicine and has also been rated as one of the top 10 clinical departments in the country for many years.

During the past 40 years, UT Southwestern’s physicians in Obstetrics and Gynecology have gained national and international recognition by authoring Williams Obstetrics and Williams Gynecology; by maintaining an active clinical research role for the National Institutes of Health (NIH); and by staffing the largest maternity service in the country.

Our outpatient facilities are located at sites across the Southwestern Medical District and in the Dallas community.  Neighborhood-based clinics provide gynecological and obstetrical care to women in areas traditionally under served.  Patients with more complex medical problems are referred to clinics based centrally either in Parkland Memorial Hospital or in one of the ambulatory sites on the UT Southwestern campus.  Inpatient care is delivered at UT Southwestern University Hospital-St. Paul and UT Southwestern University Hospital – Zale Lipshy as well as at our affiliated partner hospitals, Parkland Memorial Hospital and Children’s Medical Center.

As committed as we are to providing quality patient care, we are equally committed to training tomorrow’s obstetricians and gynecologists.  Resident, fellow, and medical student training is a major focus of the Department.  The OB/Gyn Residency Program, one of the largest in the nation, fills 20 positions annually from an applicant pool of the top medical school graduates in the United States.

With programs in all the subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology, we train American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) fellows to be future academic leaders.  Our fellows receive extensive training in patient care as well as basic and clinical research and also have the opportunity to teach residents and medical students.

Clinical Facilities

The UT Southwestern Medical District offers clinical services through a group of associated hospitals and clinics that are highly regarded for the quality of care and extensive services offered.  These facilities include Parkland Memorial Hospital; UT Southwestern University Hospital-St. Paul, UT Southwestern University Hospital – Zale Lipshy, and the UT Southwestern family of ambulatory care sites - all of which are contiguous or adjacent to The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.  UT Southwestern is nationally recognized for excellence in educating physicians, biomedical scientists, and other health care professionals.  Its faculty includes four Nobel Laureates, 15 members of the National Academy of Sciences and 17 members of the Institute of Medicine.

Listed below is a brief description of the UT Southwestern affiliated clinical facilities.

NOTE:  Please refer to each subspecialty web page for the clinical facilities that are specific to each fellowship.  The following is not a comprehensive list and may not be included in every fellowship.

PARTNER-AFFILIATED HOSPITALS:

Parkland JPEG Parkland Memorial Hospital, founded in 1894, is a 990-bed public hospital that
ensures healthcare is available to all Dallas County residents. Parkland ranked  14th in gynecology by the 2008 U.S. News and World Report’s rankings and is the primary teaching hospital for UT Southwestern Medical School.  The Parkland obstetrics service accounts for more than 16,000 birth annually - making it the nation's largest single-site delivery facility.  Of these, approximately 7000 are high-risk patients. It is also home to comprehensive inpatient and outpatient benign and subspecialty gynecologic services.  The remodeled central gynecology clinic is used exclusively for seeing gynecologic patients - many of whom are referred to the central facility from Parkland neighborhood clinics.

Named by U.S. News and World Report’s as a top pediatric provider, the facility is licensed for 483 beds, offers more than 50 subspecialty programs, and is accredited by the Joint Commission.

General Information

Texas Medical License

Patel Doody Fellows Application for a Texas medical license should be instituted immediately after being accepted into an ABOG program.  The licensing process in Texas is cumbersome and time consuming.  If not begun well in advance, obtaining a license prior to starting fellowship training, will be difficult. The Texas Medical Board (TMB) accepts applications on line.  Their web site is .http://www.tmb.state.tx.us/.  For more information, please see Getting Your Texas Medical License.

Personal Time Off

At the discretion of the fellowship program director, ABOG fellows may take up to two weeks of personal time off each fellowship year.  Personal time off may be used for personal business, leisure, or for health reasons.

Fellowship program directors may also grant fellows additional time off for special circumstances, such as job interviews or unexpected health problems.  This time is granted on a case-by-case basis, and the final decision rests with the program director.  Please note: Any time off in excess of ABOG guidelines will result in extension of the fellowship training period.

All personal time off must be approved by the program director and coverage by other clinical fellows must be obtained.

Fellows are urged to contact their fellowship program director immediately if they become ill and to obtain approval for all other time off well in advance.

Compensation and Benefits

Fellows receive health insurance and an annual trainee stipend that increases with each year of fellowship training.  Beginning in the second year, trainees are asked to take 12 week nights per year of in-house call at the UT Southwestern University Hospital, St. Paul building.  This clinical service is outside our fellows’ area of specialty training and is not associated with our fellowship training programs.  To compensate for in-house night call, fellows are appointed to UT Southwestern salaried faculty positions as part-time assistant instructors.

To be eligible for night-call supplementation, fellows must have a Texas Medical License, DEA and DPS certificates, and be credentialed with our hospitals and managed-care organizations.  A permanent Texas medical license is required to begin the credentialing process.

Income Tax Information

American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) fellows are considered trainees, and their appointment to ABOG-fellowship programs are for purposes of training.  There is no employer-employee relationship.  In spite of the fact that stipends are considered taxable income to the recipient, the IRS has ruled that UT Southwestern may not withhold income taxes from non-employee, trainee stipends.  Fellows are urged to read IRS publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education and to contact a tax advisor.

Supplemental income received as a part-time assistant instructor taking night call will have income taxes withheld.  The difference in this situation is that an employer-employee relationship exists where the part-time Assistant Instructor is performing and being compensated for a clinical service.

Living in Dallas

Dallas is an exciting place to live. Plenty of cultural and entertainment opportunities are available.  Most fellows live in Dallas neighborhoods or surrounding communities including Irving (Las Colinas), Plano and Richardson.   Housing is affordable in the Dallas area, and the school systems are good.  A wide choice of housing is available ranging from apartments to condominiums to single-family homes.  Recently, several new apartment complexes have been built in the Southwestern Medical District.  UT Southwestern campus housing  is also available and is connected by shuttle to the hospitals and the university.  More information on Dallas and the surrounding suburbs can be found at about Dallas/Fort Worth http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/home/careers/aboutdallas/. nim Dallas Skyline

The Postdoctoral Association at UT Southwestern Medical Center has put together a survival kit for postdoctoral research fellows.  This guide is oriented toward fellows who are trainees in research laboratories but is a useful orientation to housing, transportation, and entertainment in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  A PDF is available on-line at www.utsouthwestern.edu/pda by clicking the “Post Doc Survival Guide.”  Please be aware that the compensation, benefits, and personal time off information in the Survival Guide do not apply to ABOG fellows.
