Living in Dallas

Dallas is an exciting place to live. Many of our resident physicians live in Dallas neighborhoods or the surrounding cities of Irving (Las Colinas), Richardson, Plano, Highland Park, and Grapevine.  Housing is affordable in the Dallas area, and the school systems are good.  A wide choice of housing is available ranging from apartments to condominiums to single-family homes. UT Southwestern Medical Center also has campus housing available.

The Dallas area is experiencing some of the highest economic expansion in the nation. In job creation and income growth, Dallas is one of America's stars.  Dallas' entrepreneurial spirit and pro-business atmosphere paved the way to be named the best city in North America for business twice by Fortune Magazine. The Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce can provide links to provide further businesses and economic information.

Cultural opportunities include the Dallas Museum of ArtDallas OperaDallas Symphony Orchestra, several theater groups.  There are a wide range of sports  from the Dallas Cowboys (football), to the Texas Rangers (baseball), to the Dallas Mavericks (basketball), to the Dallas Stars (hockey), and to FC Dallas (soccer).  Participatory outdoor sports are popular here due to our mild winters, too.  Water sports are readily available in the many surrounding lakes. Excellent ethnic restaurants abound.

The hospital and medical school do not have on-site daycare, but several daycare centers are nearby, including the UT Southwestern - University of Texas at Dallas Callier Center, on our campus.

The residency program is based at Parkland Hospital, the main teaching institution of Southwestern Medical School at The University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Parkland Hospital, a 1000-bed facility, is on the UT Southwestern campus attached to the medical school buildings.

The Parkland Health and Hospital System does not participate in the retirement/disability portion of Social Security, so you will be required to participate in Parkland's retirement plan as a full-time employee. Your contribution is 4.5 percent of your base salary. Upon completion of your residency, you will receive all of your contributions plus interest if you have been employed less than five years.

The salary for first-year residents is $46,878.

Residents are allowed two weeks vacation annually and an additional one week CME leave. Yearly, they may take up to two weeks of paid sick leave (non-cumulative) and an additional six weeks of unpaid sick leave under the care of a physician. Maternity and paternity leave are available following these guidelines and ABOG requirements.

Group Medical insurance is through the Texas Medical Association (TMA) or Parkland Health and Hospital System (EPO). The Dallas County Hospital District provides malpractice insurance for resident physicians. Long-term disability insurance is available.
