One goal of the division is to provide expertise in gynecologic specialty areas such as dysplasia, vulvology, sexual dysfunction, infectious diseases, minimally invasive surgery, and contraception and family planning.  We strive to improve patient access to health care and continuity of care.

The Intermediate Care Center (ICC) is one of only a few emergency rooms in the nation dedicated solely to triage and treat emergent and urgent obstetric and gynecologic problems.  The ICC is managed 24 hours a day by residents with faculty supervision.  Located on Parkland Hospital's first floor, the ICC offers 2 minor surgery rooms, ultrasonography suite, and timely access to internal medicine and general surgery consultants.  In 2002, our efforts to improve health care accessibility resulted in over 21, 293 patient visits to the ICC.

For patients who require hospitalization, 3 separate resident teams are available to provide treatment.  These teams in sum manage the gynecology service at Parkland Hospital.   They also staff a centralized outpatient gynecologic clinic four days each week to treat non-urgent gynecologic problems.  In 2002, these teams provided care to 1641 hospitalized patients and performed 2862 major surgical procedures.

To further enhance patient access to health services, our division now offers colposcopy, cryotherapy, and LEEP procedures not only centrally at Parkland Hospital, but also in select neighborhood-based Community Women's Health Care clinics.  Services at these clinics are provided by nurse practitioners specially trained and supervised by faculty colposcopists.  Additionally, we are committed to improving patient follow-up within our dysplasia clinic system.  Toward this goal, an innovative computer software patient-appointment tracking system has been purchased and will soon be implemented.
