Welcome to the Privacy Office at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. We seek to ensure all university departments and employees are compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule and various state privacy laws. Our office supports both the faculty practice plan (ambulatory clinics) and the hospitals (St. Paul and Zale Lipshy University Hospitals) related to privacy practices, policies, concerns and complaints.
The HIPAA Privacy Rule provides for certain patient rights, whether or not you seek care from a UT Southwestern facility or healthcare provider. These rights include:
- The right to an accounting of disclosures (to whom UT Southwestern provides information about you);
- The right to amend medical records (to correct erroneous information);
- The right to confidential communications (to call you at a certain number or use a specific mailing address when communicating about your care);
- The right to file a complaint with the Office of Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services;
- The right to receive a facility-specific Notice of Privacy Practices (NPP) and;
- The right to request restrictions (access to your protected health information).
