Resident Core Curriculum Lecture Series
A comprehensive lecture curriculum developed to provide a well-rounded education.   Each month, a specific course is given by the experts in each field.  It is well organized, and the lecture slides will be posted on an internal website.  This 18-month curriculum was designed so that residents have a chance to take each course twice.  It will be great for Board Review!  In the past four years 100% of the residents have passed their written and oral boards on the first seating.  By the way, 90% of the time, there is FREE FOOD!

Muscle/Nerve Biopsy Conference
A review of histo-pathology slides from cases over the past week.  This is a unique opportunity to look at the pathology of muscle or nerve and discuss the differential diagnosis.  Excellent neuropathologists and neuropathology fellows lead the discussion using a multihead microscope.  Cases from both adults and children (CMC and Scottish-Rite hospital) are included.  This is the critical way to learn normal muscle and nerve pathology and understand the difference between a congential myopathy, muscular dystrophies and myositis.

Cerebrovascular Conference
This multi-disciplinary conference reviews neuro-imaging from a perspective of vascular intervention.   Most of the cases deal with aneurysms or arterio-venous malformations.  It is a great conference to attend to learn cerebrovascular anatomy and management since stroke, vascular neurosurgery, and interventional neuroradiology services attend the conference.  It is also a fairly relaxing conference since only the neurosurgery residents get "pimped".

Neuromuscular Teaching Conference
Each week's time slot is different as a potpourri of things are done from neuromuscular pathology to journal club to teaching NCV/EMG.   At times, as a junior resident the material can be overwhelming, but as you progress and get exposed to the material, the understanding obtained through the conferences is near a fellow level!

Alzheimer's Disease Center Meeting
Dr. Rosenberg is the director of the multidisciplinary Alzheimer center.  The meeting includes multiple disciplines and ranges from planning of upcoming research projects to guest lectures from dementia experts.

Grand Rounds
One unique aspect about our Grand Rounds is that the first one of every month is a combined lecture with Psychiatry.   This is great since there is quite an overlap that is being recognized between the two fields.  Grand rounds presentations include invited experts from around the world, UT Southwestern faculty and senior resident presentations of case reports or resident research projects.

Epilepsy Patient Management Conference
This is a unique multi-disciplinary conference where patients with difficult to treat epilepsy are discussed.   Video EEGs and neuroimaging including 3T MRI and SPECT scans are reviewed and discussed.  Surgical planning, including neuropsych testing, WADA, and grid placements, are discussed with the sub-specialties listed.

Brain Cutting Conference
This is a great conference to attend to learn Neuroanatomy.   Since it takes place at the Parkland Morgue, the brains that are cut are from autopsies being done on recently deceased patients.  The patients are from Parkland hospital or Childrens Medical Center of Dallas.  Usually two brains are cut.  The learning is unique since you are able to stand right next to the specimen and evaluate what various pathologies look and feel like.  The Neuropathologist leads the discussion and pimps the crowd.  Topics discussed are embryology, pathophysiology, radiology, and at times clinical management.  The following Thursday, the histopathological slides taken from the brain are reviewed with the Neuropathologist.

Forensic Brain Cutting Conference
Another opportunity to learn about Neuropathology, from a forensics perspective.   This conference takes place at the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office (which is connected to Parkland),  Therefore, the two cases are deaths which are associated with an open legal case.  Topics include suicide, homicide, child abuse, and death of unclear etiology.  The histo-pathological slides again are reviewed the following Thursday.

EMG Conference
A nice case review of nerve conduction studies and electromyograms.   Again, another opportunity to get fellowship level training during residency.  EMG and nerve conduction studies performed during the week are reviewed.  The neurophysiology fellows review the findings and the faculty point out the finer points of electrodiagnostic medicine.  Attend this conference a few times, and you'll want to do a neurophysiology fellowship.

Neuroanatomy Conference
An EXTREMELY high-yield neuroanatomy conference, during which the first part of the hour is dedicated to doing "round robin" pimping of neuroanatomy.   The second part of the hour is dedicated to a written quiz.  The material is distributed the week before, so we have time to read and prepare.  Throughout the course of the year, we will have covered 2 neuroanatomy texts cover to cover.  Among others, we have used Localization In Clinical Neurology by Brazis and Neurological Differential Diagnosis by Patten.  This is GREAT preparation for the in-service RITE exam as well as for the Board Exam.  This conference has two perks, the first being that it takes place over a FREE BUFFET LUNCH in the VIP room at the UTSW Faculty Club.  The second is that there is a large monetary award for the top three residents decided by the cumulative quiz scores at the end of the year.

Neuro-Oncology Conference
A multi-disciplinary conference that discusses the management and/or outcomes of neuro tumor cases.   The cases presentations are comprehensive that include patient's history and physical, neuroradiology, histopathology slides of any biopsies/resections, and treatment outcome with chemotherapy, radiation andsurgery.  Attending this conference is a great way of reviewing brain tumors.

Dr. Rosenberg Case Conference
A special conference led by world-renowned Neurologist, Dr. Roger Rosenberg.  Dr. Rosenberg was past chair of Neurology at UTSW, past president of the AAN, and is current editor of the Archives of Neurology.  During this conference, a patient whose diagnosis is uncertain is presented to Dr. Rosenberg.  As the history and physical exam is conveyed to Dr. Rosenberg, he speaks his thought process and approach to developing a differential diagnosis, which helps to develop our own acumen.  The second part of the hour is dedicated to Dr. Rosenberg examining the patient in real life.  As he examines the patient, he discusses pathological findings in terms of neuroanatomical localization.  The last part of the hour is dedicated to narrowing the differential diagnosis and discussing the pathophysiology and management of a few of the differential diagnoses.  It is a worthwhile conference to attend as Dr. Rosenberg is not only a great clinical neurologist but also a wonderful historian of neurology.

Basic Neuroscience Lecture Series
This conference is sponsored by the Center for Basic Neuroscience and includes internal and invited outside speakers.  The topics are basic neuroscience research ranging from molecular mechanisms to cellular/tissue electrophysiology to behavior and human research applications.  This is a great opportunity for research-oriented residents to keep up with developments in basic science or to identify a mentor for research experiences.

Neuropathology Lecture Series
This series of twelve lectures is given annually by the Neuropathology department.   It is a comprehensive overview of Neuropathology that is High-yield for the Boards.  Most residents attend the series once or twice.

Subspecialty Journal Club
Journal Club has adopted a new format starting in 2006.  The 3 hour session is held over a FREE DINNER at various nice restaurants in town.  Each Journal Club is dedicated to discussing the landmark papers of a particular neurology sub-specialty.   Each resident is responsible to discuss one/two assigned articles in terms of what problem was asked, how the study was formulated, what the results were, and a critique of the outcomes.  The discussion is lead by a sub-specialist in that field.

Wernicke's Rounds
A social event for residents and families once a month at a nice restaurant in town.   This is a great event for families to get to know one another and to socialize with fellow residents and fellows outside the hospital.  Did I mention FREE FOOD!
