The Neurology residency and fellowship programs at UT Southwestern are committed to continuous improvement. The goal is to provide the best clinical and academic training in Neurology, to continue to be the preeminent Neurology training program in Texas and the Southwest.
Here are some recent and upcoming changes that we've instituted to improve the quality of our program:
2008 - Parkland hospital will initiate the electronic medical records system for physician documentation to supplement the electronic environment. The UT Southwestern outpatient practice and the Dallas VA system already uses a fully electronic medical record.
September 2008 - Comprehensive headache clinic. Residents will take part in the management of typical and refractory headache syndromes under the direction of Dr. Todd Rozen.
July 2008 - Neuro Critical Care fellowship. Two fellows each year train in the Parkland and University hospital Neurology/Neurosurgery ICU under the direction of Dr. Wengui Yu.
May 2008 - Movement disorders fellowship approved by the TMB and UT Southwestern.
March 2008 - Dr. Mark Agostini and Dr. Elliott Frohman were awarded the A.B. Baker teacher recognition award by the American Academy of Neurology.
December 2007 - Clinicopathological conference. In addition to the regular didactic series, the quarterly CPC will challenge the residents' diagnostic skills with an unknown case followed by neuropathological correlation.
July 2007 - Sleep clinic and laboratory. Residents and fellows participate in sleep studies at Parkland, VA medical center and the University hospital. Sleep neurology consultations at University Hospital under the direction of Dr. Greg Carter.
July 2007 - Night float. The night float ensures that residents on the hospital service have adequate time to care for their patients and get adequate sleep and recovery from day to day.
July 2007 - We begin using New Innovations residency management software to manage residency schedules, evaluations and work hour recording. This application allows efficient online communication between residents and program administrators.
October 2006 - New neurology residents' lounge at Parkland (8 South) immediately adjacent to the patient care areas is a great place for residents to better perform their clinical duties, study and relax.
September 2006 - Neuro intensive care service to care for patients in the Neuro intensive care unit at Zale-Lipshy University hospital under the direction of Dr. Wengui Yu.
August 2006 - St. Paul hospital consult service. The addition of St. Paul hospital to the UT Southwestern Medical Center provides residents with an additional opportunity to see patients in a private hospital setting.
July 2006 - Core didactic lecture series. Residents have two opportunities to attend the core lectures during their training to while reducing the repetition of lectures from year-to-year. An introduction to neurology month and introductory lecture series during the first few months of the PGY2 year allow new residents to review the basics and become familiar with the format of our training program prior to starting on the hospital wards.
2006 - The Southwestern Neuromuscular fellowship becomes one of the first to be fully accredited as a subspecialty training program in neuromuscular medicine by the ACGME.
