The Neurology residency and fellowship programs at UT Southwestern are committed to continuous improvement. The goal is to provide the best clinical and academic training in Neurology, to continue to be the preeminent Neurology training program in Texas and the Southwest.
Here are some recent and upcoming items that demonstrate our commitment to the quality of our program:
2010 - New fellowships programs available at UT Southwestern in movement disorders and neuro-oncology
2009 - The neurology teaching program was awarded a prestigious Whitaker lectureship from the American Academy of Neurology. We have invited Dr. Dan Lowenstein (from UCSF) as the Whitaker lecturer for UT Southwestern.
Sept. 2009 - Ambulatory Neurology at Parkland Hospital is recognized for excellence by the hospital after changes in scheduling and addition of a physician's assistant lead to improved patient access.
Aug. 2009 - Two new enhanced weekly teaching conferences were initiated for neuroradiology teaching and EEG review
April 2009 - Parkland hospital now has a fully electronic medical records system. The UT Southwestern outpatient practice, University hospital and the Dallas VA system also have electronic medical records.
2009 - Great academic output. Two residents presented abstracts at the International Society for Neuroimmunology, Two presented at the American Academy of Neurology, and three residents presented at the Carrell-Krusen Neuromuscular Symposium in 2009.
2009 - New faculty join neurology. Dr. Ben Greenberg (from Johns Hopkins) has initiated a major initiative for the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of transverse myelitis. Dr. Pradeep Modur (from Louisville, KY) brings his experience to the epilepsy monitoring unit and sleep clinic. Dr. Jeff Ortstadt joined the general neurology and sleep neurology program. Dr. Ellen Marder joins the teaching faculty at the VA medical center. In addition, four of our recently graduated fellows have joined as junior faculty. Drs. Wanda Castro-Borrero, Erik Burton, Sri Muppidi, Ardith Courtney, and Muna Khan bring their enthusiasm to the teaching faculty.
October 2008 - Adult neurology residency has been approved by ACGME for an increase in complement. Our four-year categorical program now supports 7 residents per year.
2008 - Neurodevelopmental disorders fellowship approved by ACGME. First fellow will join the program in 2009
2008 - Pediatric neurology residency has worked with pediatrics to offer a dual 5-year program that combines 2 years of outstanding pediatrics training at Children's medical center followed by 3 years of neurology training at UT Southwestern. Child neurology supports 3 residents per year.
July 2008 - Neuro Critical Care fellowship. Two fellows will train each year in the Parkland and University hospital Neurology/Neurosurgery ICU under the direction of Dr. Wengui Yu. First fellow starts in July 2008.
March 2008 - Dr. Mark Agostini and Dr. Elliott Frohman were awarded the A.B. Baker teacher recognition award by the American Academy of Neurology.
2008 - Autonomic function laboratory. Under the direction of Dr. Steve Vernino, the autonomic function laboratory provides state-of-the-art quantitative assessment of autonomic function for patients in the University and Parkland practice.
December 2007 - Clinicopathological conference. In addition to the regular didactic series and journal club, the quarterly CPC challenges the residents' diagnostic skills with an unknown case followed by neuropathological correlation.
July 2007 - Sleep clinic and laboratory. Residents and fellows participate in sleep studies at Parkland, VA medical center and the University hospital. Sleep neurology consultations at University Hospital under the direction of Dr. Greg Carter.
July 2007 - Night float. The night float ensures that residents on the hospital service have adequate time to care for their patients and get adequate sleep and recovery from day to day. The night float senior learns the art of ER triage and managing the night time neurology team.
July 2007 - Initiation of New Innovations residency management software to manage residency schedules, evaluations and work hour recording. This application allows efficient online communication between residents and program administrators.
October 2006 - Newly renovated neurology residents' lounge at Parkland (8 South) immediately adjacent to the patient care areas is a great place for residents to better perform their clinical duties, study and relax.
September 2006 - Neuro intensive care service to care for patients in the Neuro intensive care unit at Zale-Lipshy University hospital under the direction of Dr. Wengui Yu.
August 2006 - St. Paul hospital consult service. The addition of St. Paul hospital to the UT Southwestern Medical Center provides residents with an additional opportunity to see patients in a private hospital setting.
July 2006 - Core didactic lecture series. Residents have two opportunities to attend the core lectures during their training to while reducing the repetition of lectures from year-to-year. An introduction to neurology month and introductory lecture series during the first few months of the PGY2 year allow new residents to review the basics and become familiar with the format of our training program prior to starting on the hospital wards.
2006 - The Southwestern Neuromuscular fellowship becomes one of the first to be fully accredited as a subspecialty training program in neuromuscular medicine by the ACGME.
