Summer Research Program 2006

Andrew Palacios was in the SRP in 2006 and worked in Dr. Michel Saint-Cyr's lab. He graduated from Townview Health Professions in 2007 and is currently an undergrad at UT Arlington. He presented his research at the recent 2009 SACNAS National Conference which is geared toward advancing hispanics/chicanos and native americans in science.

Andrew won first out of 702 undergrads in Environmental Sciences. The title of his research was "ECOLOGY OF A TOXIC ALGAL SPECIES: GROWTH OF PRYMNESIUM PARVUM IN DIFFERENT WATER MEDIA." There was recognition and a small cash prize.

Summer Research Program 2009

Maria Ruiz was in the SRP in 2009 and worked in Dr. Michelle Tallquist's lab. Dr. Tallquist's research lab interests are cardiovascular development, signal transduction, mouse genetics, and developmental/cancer biology. 

Maria Ruiz, a senior at Skyline High School, placed first in DISD for the science fair competition. Her science fair project was an extension of her STARS summer research project and was titled "The Role of PDGFR-B in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells." She gave an oral presentation to seniors/juniors, STARS staff, and Skyline high school faculty.  

Maria also exemplified excellence by being awarded a $20,000 Sulentic Family Foundation Scholarship for her demonstration of integrity, hard work, and financial need.

Geneinde Taylor-Edwards was in the SRP in 2009 and worked in Dr. Pier Scaglioni's lab.  Dr. Scaglioni's research lab focuses on leukemia and lung cancer.
