The STARS Summer Research Program gives science teachers and students an opportunity to work in a research environment. During the summer of 2007, 5 secondary science teachers from around the state of Texas, 19 high school juniors from the Dallas ISD, and 4 Eastfield College students started an eight-week summer internship working in research laboratories on the UT Southwestern Campus and affiliated institutions. Under the guidance of a faculty host, participants complete a research project and present their findings at the end of the summer.

Tiffany Kiser Ford Middle School Host: Fiemu Nwariaku, M.D., F.A.C.S. Surgery		Studying the mechanisms of tumor metastases in thyroid cancer.
Julia Lawrence Cedar Hill 9th Grade Center Host: Shuxin Li, M.D., Ph.D. Neurology		Studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying axonal regeneration failure and cell death in the damaged CNS.
Dusty Vincer Williams High School Host: Marlyn Mayo, M.D. Internal Medicine		Researching the pathogenesis of autoimmune liver diseases; Primary biliary cirrhosis.
