Departmental Safety Liaison Program On July 13, 2004, The Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) office initiated the Departmental Safety Liaison (DSL) Program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. The purpose of the DSL program was to establish a safety liaison to serve as a direct point of contact for EH&S. The goal of the DSL program is to: • Enhance interdepartmental communication during emergencies. • Improve and coordinate emergency response efforts. • Develop creative methods to enhance safety awareness and to maintain a safe and healthy workplace environment. The responsibilities of a DSL include: • Disseminating important safety information to faculty and staff. • Reporting safety issues and/or concerns to EH&S. • Maintaining and implementing the department’s evacuation plan during fire drills and actual emergencies. • Identifying individuals who may need assistance in the event of an emergency due to temporary or permanent disability. • Meeting quarterly for safety training and/or to discuss current and relative safety issues.
