Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

With Father’s Day coming soon, it’s a good time to talk about issues relating to men’s health. It might not be what you think of as a good Father’s Day activity, but talking with your father or son about prostate cancer could help save a life.

Dr. Yair Lotan, a urologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says family history is a major risk factor for prostate cancer, so it’s important for family members to talk to each other about their health experiences. Those who have a family history of prostate cancer should start having annual screening exams and tests at age 40. Prostate cancer is highly treatable if it is detected early enough. There are drugs that may help prevent prostate cancer. Studies also indicate that a low-fat diet may help reduce prostate cancer risk.
