Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

Children are among our most vulnerable citizens because they need adults to care for them, provide for them and even help keep them out of danger. This week on Health Watch, we’ll talk about caring for children. When it comes to health care, not all children get equal treatment.

Doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center recently conducted an analysis of a nationwide survey and found that minority children don’t always receive the same level of health care as white children. Minority children — Latino, African-American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American or multiracial Dr. Glenn Flores were less likely to have visited a physician or received a prescription within the last year. Latino and Native American children were less likely to be covered by medical insurance. Dr. Glenn Flores, a
UT Southwestern pediatrician, says this needs to be addressed because disparities for children tend to become disparities for adults.
