This week on Health Watch, we’ve been talking about staying safe and healthy this holiday season so you can enjoy the festivities instead of suffering. Cooking and making holiday treats together is a fun way of forming warm holiday memories, but doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center say you need to take precautions with kids in the kitchen.
Dr. Pam Okada, a pediatrician and emergency room physician at UT Southwestern, says children should be closely supervised in the kitchen. Be careful where you put dishes that contain hot foods because one tug on a tablecloth can send them down on top of a child. When working in the kitchen, everyone should wear close fitting clothing so no sleeves trail into food or snag pots and pans. When children want to help, give them tasks that don’t involve sharp objects or hot items.
