This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about making sure your holiday decorating is danger-free. Dr. Robert Wiebe, a pediatric emergency medicine expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says that during the holiday season, children are at risk from the same kinds of dangers they face the rest of the year, such as sharp objects and choking, but decorations and holiday busyness may put kids at greater risk.
When decorating for the holidays, keep out of reach anything that’s small enough to go in a child’s mouth. Choking hazards include small lights, tiny ornaments and pine needles. Also look out for ornaments that could create sharp pieces if they fall and break. Strands of lights can also be dangerous. Inspect light strands before using them, and don’t overload outlets.
