This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about how you can avoid holiday weight gain while still enjoying the holiday season. We’ve talked about how to approach parties and which popular holiday foods to focus on. But, let’s face it, you don’t want to give up the good treats entirely. That’s when it helps to have some good eating strategies.

Lona Sandon, a registered dietitian at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says one thing to do during the busy holiday season is avoid fatty fast food. Stick to regular meal times, and try to make your non-party meals as nutritious and low-calorie as possible. When choosing higher-calorie treats to enjoy, focus on the foods you can only get at this time of year and avoid those you can have at any time. Don’t forget about portion sizes. Large servings of even nutritious food can give you too many calories
