Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about making Halloween a little less scary. The tempting treats from trick-or-treating don’t do any favors to our teeth or our waistlines. Previously on Health Watch, we offered the suggestion to just ditch the goodies after Halloween night. But if you can’t bear to do that, you should set limits on candy consumption.

Lona Sandon, a registered dietitian at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says a reasonable serving of candy is three bite-size pieces of candy or one fun-size candy bar. Limit treats to about three times per week, and set rules about when candy can be eaten — such as only as a dessert and not before meals. To reduce the amount of candy you have on hand after the holiday, buy only what you need to hand out to trick-or-treaters and avoid the post-holiday candy sales.
