Halloween is right around the corner, and it offers fears both imagined and real. This week on Health Watch, we’ll discuss what you can do about some of those fears. For adults, the scariest thing about the holiday may be the number on the bathroom scale after eating all that candy. Halloween marks the beginning of a season of food-oriented holidays. But you don’t have to let it be your downfall.

Bernadette Latson, a registered dietitian at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says you can go ahead and enjoy Halloween, but make it be just one day. Take the kids trick-or-treating, then come home and sort the candy. Small children enjoy sorting games, and you can sort the treats by shape, size, color or flavor. Pick out a few favorites to enjoy — and then get rid of the rest. There’s no temptation to indulge if the treats aren’t sitting around.
