Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’ve been talking about health problems that come up in the fall months. We’re heading into a busy time of year full of activities and holidays. It’s also a time of year when colds, the flu and other illnesses start to spread.

Dr. James Luby, an infectious disease expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center, offers a few tips to help you stay healthy this fall and winter. If possible, avoid close contact with sick people. And when you’re sick, try to stay home and away from others. Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough. Wash your hands often, especially after being around other people. Try to keep your hands away from your face. Viruses often get into the body through the eyes, nose or mouth by way of the hands. It’s also a good idea to keep yourself as strong and healthy as possible by getting enough sleep and getting proper nutrition. That helps your body resist or fight illness.
