Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about what you may be able to do to improve  — or even save - the lives of others. There may come a time when you are in a position to make the difference between life and death for someone else. Will you be ready? You might be, if you learn CPR.

Dr. Paul Pepe, chairman of emergency medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says it’s almost impossible for medical help to get to a heart attack victim before permanent damage occurs. In those crucial minutes, a bystander who knows CPR can make a big difference. Less than 25 percent of the population is trained in CPR, and that’s the weak link in the emergency response chain. You can make a difference by taking a course or by organizing a course for your office, school, church or community group. The American Heart Association can provide information on CPR training.
