Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

When we talk about health, we usually think about what we can do to make ourselves feel better. But this week on Health Watch, we’re going to talk about giving back — things you can do to make others feel better.

There are some people who make big moves to help improve life for others. For example, last year Dr. Amy McCollum went from completing her pediatrics residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center to Africa, where she works in a pediatric AIDS clinic in Zimbabwe. She says the crisis there is so severe that there is a generation of children who may not reach adulthood if someone doesn’t do something.

But you don’t have to become a doctor or move to Africa to make a difference in the lives of others. You can give hope or save lives at home with only a little bit of effort, and that’s what we’ll be talking about this week.
