Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’ve been talking about how the workplace can affect your health. Office workers may face problems such as stress or injuries from overusing communication devices, for which the main cure is taking a break. But blue-collar workers can face serious injuries on the job. For instance, eye injuries are the most common on-the-job injury among construction workers.

Dr. Preston Blomquist, an ophthalmologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says most of these injuries happened when workers weren’t using safety equipment, and they could have been easily prevented by using safety goggles. Educating workers about the importance of safety gear could make a big difference in preventing workplace eye injuries and possibly preventing blindness.
