Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about losing a quick few pounds so you’ll be ready for a reunion, vacation or other summer event. We’ve been talking about the importance of eating right, with a lean, balanced diet, but diet alone probably won’t get the fast results you’re looking for.

Regular exercise is an essential part of a quick weight-loss program. You can add exercise to your daily routine by taking a walk after meals or exercising during TV commercials. Dr. Jo Ann Carson, a nutrition expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says strength training to build muscles can give you noticeable results. Even if you only lose five pounds, if you turn five more pounds of fat into muscle you’ll trim up and look better in clothes or in a swimsuit.

Next: How the buddy system can help you get results.
