Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about childhood obesity. We’ve been discussing ways to prevent childhood obesity by teaching good habits, but what if your child is already overweight?

Dr. Scott Grundy, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says the first step is to analyze how the child became overweight.  Did it result from a sedentary lifestyle, eating the wrong foods or eating portions that are too large? Then make adjustments based on what you’ve learned. It may be easier — and healthier — to focus on developing good new habits such as proper portions and a healthy variety of foods than to focus on dieting and losing weight. Planned meal times may help, too, especially with the kind of hectic schedule that encourages eating on the run.
