Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about skin care. Previously, we listed the first two steps toward great skin without spending a fortune on all those magic-sounding formulas at the cosmetics counter. There are two more key steps suggested by Dr. Sarah Weitzul, a dermatologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

After using a sunblock and a retinoid, you should use a preparation containing a hydroxy acid, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid or salicylic acid. These stimulate collagen production. The best choice is a cream that contains one of these ingredients instead of a soup of all of them.

Finally, antioxidants such as vitamins C and E will help slow aging. You can also get these through a healthy diet. Dr. Weitzul says you don’t have to pay a lot to get all these skin treatments. For the best advice on your skin, visit a dermatologist instead of the cosmetics counter.
