Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about how to keep your skin healthy – and looking great. Department store cosmetics counters offer a variety of skin treatments that promise to prevent wrinkles and keep you looking young, but they usually come with a high price tag.

Dr. Sarah Weitzul, a dermatologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says you don’t have to pay a fortune to have great skin. The first step is to use a broad-spectrum sunblock daily. That’s one of the most important keys to avoiding wrinkles and other sun damage. The next skin preparation you need is a retinoid, which is a derivative of vitamin A. This treatment helps minimize fine wrinkles, stimulates collagen production and reverses some sun damage. The most powerful retinoids are available only by prescription. These treatments may be irritating to sensitive skin and should be used only every other day at first.

Next: Two more steps toward better skin.
