Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about healthy new habits to start this year. Women hear a lot about how important it is for women to examine their breasts monthly for possible signs of cancer, but doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center say men need to examine themselves monthly, as well.

Dr. Ganesh Raj, a UT Southwestern urologist, says early detection of testicular cancer plays a key role in improving outcomes. This cancer primarily strikes young men, so men older than 14 should examine themselves every month, looking for changes such as lumps, hardness or surface irregularity. The monthly exams help men get a sense of what normal feels like so they’re more likely to notice changes earlier. Early detection has made testicular cancer a very manageable disease, so see your doctor as soon as possible if you detect something abnormal.
